Two Leading Modes in the Evolution of Major Sudden Stratospheric Warmings and Their Distinctive Surface Influence

چکیده

Abstract Height‐time domain empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis is conducted to extract the dominant variations in evolution of sudden stratospheric warming events (SSWs). The EOF1 corresponds weak (I+) and strong (I−) polar vortex before onset SSWs EOF2 indicates (W+) (W−) during SSWs. development I− associated with stronger eddy heat flux contributed by planetary wavenumbers 1 2, whereas I + related wavenumber 1. W are linked both while happening W− I+ W+ can exert influence on surface such as negative phase North Atlantic Oscillation, which that different initial states intensities lead influence. This could help better predict tropospheric response following

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings as Noise-Induced Transitions

Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are usually considered to be initiated by planetary wave activity. Here it is asked whether small-scale variability (e.g., related to gravity waves) can lead to SSWs given a certain amount of planetary wave activity that is by itself not sufficient to cause a SSW. A highly vertically truncated version of the Holton–Mass model of stratospheric wave–mean flow ...

On the Relationship between ENSO, Stratospheric Sudden Warmings, and Blocking

This paper examines the influence of El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on different aspects of major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), focusing on the precursor role of blocking events. The results reveal an ENSO modulation of the blocking precursors of SSWs. European and Atlantic blocks tend to precede SSWs during El Ni~ no (EN), whereas eastern Pacific and Siberian blocks are the pref...

The Life Cycle of the Northern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Motivated by recent evidence of strong stratospheric–tropospheric coupling during the Northern Hemisphere winter, this study examines the evolution of the atmospheric flow and wave fluxes at levels throughout the stratosphere and troposphere during the composite life cycle of a sudden stratospheric warming. The composite comprises 39 major and minor warming events using 44 years of NCEP–NCAR re...

Zonal-Mean Dynamics of Extended Recoveries from Stratospheric Sudden Warmings

The recovery of theArctic polar vortex following stratospheric suddenwarmings is found to take upward of 3 months in a particular subset of cases, termed here polar-night jet oscillation (PJO) events. The anomalous zonal-mean circulation above the pole during this recovery is characterized by a persistently warm lower stratosphere, and above this a cold midstratosphere and anomalously high stra...
